Three Fun Family Activities in Daphne, Alabama

Things to do in Daphne AL

Summer is almost over. There’s just about one more month of warm days and no school. So, get out and enjoy family activities in Daphne while the weather’s nice! Visit the American Sports Art Museum for those of you enthusiasts out there, Alligator Alley if you want to learn a little something, or Village Point Park Preserve for a quiet stroll through the Great Outdoors.

The American Sports Art Museum & Archives

The American Sports Art Museum and Archives (ASAMA) was founded in 1984. It is located in the architecturally-acclaimed main campus building at the United States Sports Academy. Due to its beautiful appearance, this museum is arguably one of the most aesthetically pleasing structures in higher education. ASAMA is dedicated to the preservation of sports history, art, and literature. Since its opening date, this museum has recognized the importance of the cultural connectivity of athletic competition and artists expression.

There’s so much to see at ASAMA. Its collection includes more than 1500 pieces across all media including paintings, sculpture, prints, posters, photography, and assemblage. For instance, you can stop by to view The Thomas P. Rosandich Gallery. This gallery embodies the performance and movement of man by creating an awareness of the role art media play in capturing our sports heroes and perpetuating their performances for posterity. ASAMA also houses the largest outdoor mural in Alabama! The extensive collection of art at this museum is believed to be the largest of sports art in North America.

The American Sports Art Museum and Archives is free and open to the public. However, of course, donations are always appreciated. So, when you get a chance this summer, stop by and see the beautiful artwork and sports memorabilia. Take the virtual tour on their website, or take a look at their special programs to get an idea of what you should expect to see during your visit.

Alligator Alley

Alligator Alley is a fun learning adventure for student and teachers alike! After a guided tour along the boardwalk, your student will get to witness the alligator feedings. Afterward, you will even have the opportunity to hold one of the baby gators! This is the perfect place for a hands-on opportunity to learn about wildlife.

There is a self-guided tour along the elevated boardwalk to safely view these reptiles in their habitat. The entire walk is kid-friendly and safe – plus, it’s handicap accessible. There is a shaded picnic area for lunch and over 450 alligators, from hatchlings to adults. Make sure you bring your cameras so that you can remember this exciting adventure!

Alligator Alley is open seven days a week from 10 AM until 5 PM. Live feedings take place at 11 AM, 1 PM, and 4 PM. This location is perfect for school field trips or for birthday parties! Visit their website for more information.

Village Point Park Preserve

Village Point Park Preserve is the largest park in Daphne, AL. It’s an estuary for wildlife, and there is also a historic cemetery located on the property. Plus, this preserve is allegedly home to Daphne’s hidden treasure!

Treasure is an exciting word that immediately captures most people’s interest. So a trip to this location is already sure to be a treat. Colorful legends and local stories tell of the infamous pirate Jean Lafitte sailing on the bay and hiding riches under a nearby bluff. Whether or not you find the alleged gold, you’re to find treasure of a different kind. The preserve is rich in local, national, and world history.

Some of the earliest inhabitants of North America lived and roamed this land. The land itself is unique and without equal in this area. State champion trees, unsullied wetlands streams, and undeveloped woodlands are just a fraction of the wonders contained in the preserve. Upon a visit to this preserve, Daphne residents and visitors alike will enjoy one of the very few remaining public beaches on Mobile Bay. There’s so much to enjoy at this location. You definitely don’t want to miss out!
