Resolve to Save Money in 2017? Here’s How to Cut The Cord from Your Cable Bill!

Ditching Cable Service Daphne
Broadcast television is seeing its viewers leave every day. Original television is now being produced for online streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon. Netflix original shows have won Emmys beating out cable tv networks like ABC, CBS and NBC. The American economy is falling and people are losing their jobs, so it’s time to say goodbye to your $100 a month cable bill and say hello to Netflix, Hulu and other streaming services.

Online Streaming Services

The key to being a successful cord cutter is knowing what services are available that you like. There are nearly a dozen apps available to make up for the channels you gave up when you terminated your cable bill.

Netflix offers a $7.99 per month subscription that provides you with a library of old and current films, television shows and original entertainment created by Netflix. Netflix was originally a DVD-by-mail rental service, it’s now become the granddaddy of online streaming. It’s become known for its popular slew of original shows: House of Cards, Master of None, Orange is the New Black, Love, Bloodline, BoJack Horseman, Grace and Frankie, Making a Murderer, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Marvel’s Daredevil and Jessica Jones, Luke Cage (and soon Iron Fist), Chelsea, Narcos, and more. The one negative aspect of this service is the library of films and TV shows changes constantly. You’re not always guaranteed to see a show’s entire series.

Hulu is an online streaming service that provides original content, movies and current episodes of your favorite tv shows. They charge $7.99 per month with commercials and $11.99 per month for commercial free. Hulu’s material has become popular among its subscribers, not as popular as Netflix but has produced shows that have garnered Golden Globe nominations. Hulu offers shows from all the major networks (Fox, ABC, NBC) but not CBS. While there are a few CBS shows on Hulu, keep in mind that shows such as The Big Bang Theory are currently only available to stream through the CBS App that has its own associated cost.

Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime is available for a yearly subscription price that breaks down to about $8.25 a month. This service comes with much more than internet streaming though. Amazon Prime members also enjoy Free 2 Day Shipping on most items sold on Amazon, Free e-books, free music, and much more. Amazon has strongly invested in creating original television shows and calls on its viewers to vote on the pilots they would like Amazon to develop. Some of Amazon’s popular shows include: The Man in the High Castle, Bosch, Mozart in the Jungle and Transparent.

Using an HD antenna will give you the ability to receive the major networks over the airwaves in HD. Most recently, HD antennas are now able to be setup inside your home instead of on a roof. Before you buy an HD antenna, you need to find out if you have over-the-air HD in your home.  Antenna prices range from $20 to $50 and now can even be paired with a DVR device that saves shows to watch later. Antennas are also great for news and weather if your internet may be down. Many people will keep an antenna set up as a back up for internet outages, which will knock out all of your streaming services.

When Not to Cut the Cord

Before you take the plunge and cut your cord, you need to find out what the best option for you. You can’t get every channel from a streaming service. Remember when you cut the cable cord and begin to pay for multiple services, the cost begins to increase.
