Online Streaming Services
Netflix offers a $7.99 per month subscription that provides you with a library of old and current films, television shows and original entertainment created by Netflix. Netflix was originally a DVD-by-mail rental service, it’s now become the granddaddy of online streaming. It’s become known for its popular slew of original shows: House of Cards, Master of None, Orange is the New Black, Love, Bloodline, BoJack Horseman, Grace and Frankie, Making a Murderer, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Marvel’s Daredevil and Jessica Jones, Luke Cage (and soon Iron Fist), Chelsea, Narcos, and more. The one negative aspect of this service is the library of films and TV shows changes constantly. You’re not always guaranteed to see a show’s entire series.
Hulu is an online streaming service that provides original content, movies and current episodes of your favorite tv shows. They charge $7.99 per month with commercials and $11.99 per month for commercial free. Hulu’s material has become popular among its subscribers, not as popular as Netflix but has produced shows that have garnered Golden Globe nominations. Hulu offers shows from all the major networks (Fox, ABC, NBC) but not CBS. While there are a few CBS shows on Hulu, keep in mind that shows such as The Big Bang Theory are currently only available to stream through the CBS App that has its own associated cost.
Amazon Prime is available for a yearly subscription price that breaks down to about $8.25 a month. This service comes with much more than internet streaming though. Amazon Prime members also enjoy Free 2 Day Shipping on most items sold on Amazon, Free e-books, free music, and much more. Amazon has strongly invested in creating original television shows and calls on its viewers to vote on the pilots they would like Amazon to develop. Some of Amazon’s popular shows include: The Man in the High Castle, Bosch, Mozart in the Jungle and Transparent.
When Not to Cut the Cord
Before you take the plunge and cut your cord, you need to find out what the best option for you. You can’t get every channel from a streaming service. Remember when you cut the cable cord and begin to pay for multiple services, the cost begins to increase.
