January is a time when many are working hard to stick with New Year’s Resolutions. More often than not, one of these resolutions relates to health and fitness. To stay on track, it helps to have a group of people that are working toward the same goal as you. A perfect way to find that group is by registering for a 5k race. These races, being only 3.1 miles in length, are a great starting spot for beginners but also offer a challenge for more experienced runners.

Run for Shep Charity 5k
Sticking with your resolution is a good feeling, but helping out others along the way makes it even better. The 5th Annual Run for Shep 5k is happening Saturday, Jan. 20 from 9 a.m. to noon. You can participate as a runner or a walker, depending on your skill level. The race will begin at 9 a.m. for the 5k at 10 a.m. for the Fun Run, both in front of Daphne City Hall.
To register, use the online form, or come in person to McCoy Outdoor, Run-N-Tri, Fleet Feet in Mobile, Running Wild in Fairhope, or the Bounds Family YMCA in Daphne. Packet pickup will be at the YMCA on Jan. 19 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m or on race day from 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.
The cost for the race is $20 per adult ahead of time or $15 for children 14 and under. Registration comes with a wristband and technical shirt. Participants must register by Jan. 13 to have a shirt size guaranteed.
Awards will be given for the top male and female overall, and the top three males and females by age group.
After the race, there will be a “No Mo’ Chemo” party for every local child who has finished chemo in 2017. At the party, you’ll be treated to food, kids characters, jump houses, a photo booth, music, games, a raffle, and the awards presentation. Runners will receive admission to the party via their race wristbands.
About Shepard’s Flock
This race benefits Shepard’s Flock, a non-profit organization whose mission is to financially assist with the non-medical related expenses of local families with childhood cancer warriors who are undergoing treatment at USA Children’s and Women’s. All of the proceeds from the race will go to Shepard’s Flock. If you are unable to participate in the 5k but would still like to support the cause, you can register as a Ghost Runner for $15.
